Description
The historic Orpheum Theater, originally known as the "Pantage Theatre", is located at 1192 Market Street in the Civic Center area, between Grove and 8th Streets in Hyde, San Francisco, California. Opened in 1926 by the architect B. Markus Pritek for the owner of the theater chain Alexander Pantage, this theater is a true historical masterpiece.
The interior is impressive with a vaulted ceiling, and the facade of the theater is made in the Plateresque style, emphasizing the late Spanish Gothic style. The Orpheum accommodates 2,197 visitors. In 1998, after an extensive renovation costing $20 million, the theater became better equipped to host Broadway shows. This cultural landmark has been designated a San Francisco Landmark by the city's Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
The Orpheum Theatre, along with the Golden Gate Theatre, is owned by BroadwaySF, a theatrical production company owned by Robert Nederlander.
